Childhood: finding light in the dark (Doug's life story #1)
童年往事:從黑暗中長出力量,我學會了看見光的能力|道哥的人生三部曲 #1
About this episode
Hi, I'm Doug!
Have you ever felt you were dealt a bad hand at the start of life?
Haunted by the shadows of the past, longing for a way out? In this episode,
I let my guard down for the first time and take you into my real childhood.
The stories I've never told: Going a week without a bath, living on instant noodles, being away from home for three days with no one noticing… A single-parent family, constantly moving to escape debt — a childhood full of scarcity and insecurity.
In an environment with no sense of safety, how I learned to survive on my own, and to pick out the positive resources from experiences that seemed terrible.
Struggling at school: from 19 points on the English entrance exam to over 800 on the TOEIC. The shock of being sued for a million over online sales in college! Starting adult life with NT$500,000 (about US$15,000) in student loans, and taking my first job in insurance sales because I wanted to turn my life around.
What I want you to know: it isn't the people with the most resources who succeed, but those who know how to find light in the dark who truly make their own way.
If you feel life is too hard, maybe you just haven't seen the window yet. But it's always there, as long as you choose to face the light.
This episode is the start of my FIRE story. Next time, I'll share how, step by step, I climbed out of these difficulties and began building the FIRE life I have now.
